I would rather use a popup 
(http://demo.qooxdoo.org/current/apiviewer/#qx.ui.popup.Popup). Popups 
are the base for windows, menus or tool tips. It should do exactly what 
you want. Just assign them a black background and set the opacity. You 
can configure the popup with any layout and add your child widgets to it.
