Yeah, I would love a "well setup" network.

Feeling guilt and shame here.

We have boxes of dangerous USB keys that have been found unattended in public
spaces.

Shaun

if you have time, I'd love to see you elaborate on this post. I'm sure our
network is not "welll setup" - I'd realy love to see this discussion get some
traction.

USB keys on their own are even dangerous as you know.

It’s not as clear-cut as it may first appear. Although it is possible, it is
not recommended. I have yet to find a definition of “meets security protocols”.
The requirement to “develop procedures” is not clearly defined on this page or
the referenced link.

“In schools access to the network by a student’s privately owned device is not
recommended as network security could be breached. A Principal may determine
that for educational purposes students will use their private device to access
the network. This connection to the network is provided only if the device
meets security protocols. Schools that wish students to connect to the
department’s network are required to develop procedures that ensure the
students’ privately owned devices are assessed (for what?) prior to connection
and have the necessary security provisions, as outlined in … (link)”.

In addition, Principals can now determine whether students’ private devices may
be connected to the school network.

This came through via my Principal this morning.

Did anyone else see it?

Does it mean what I think it means?

DETE Policy and Procedure Register

Significant procedure changes; to be noted by Principals for Semester 2, 2012

Acceptable Use of the Department’s Information, Communication and Technology
(ICT) Network and Systems
The title change of this procedure reflects its new focus. The implementation
of a login message on school networks removes the requirement for teachers to
sign a usage statement. The message includes an explanation of limited personal
use to reduce misinterpretation. In addition, Principals can now determine
whether students’ private devices may be connected to the school network.
