Rex,
1. Visual Basic.NET was a complete rewrite, from the ground up, after VB6.
VB Express is derived from VB.NET. There is a bit of getting used to a new
system. What I like about it is its consistency. The old VB6 had a few 'oh
well that's how it's done' aspects to it.
2. In all modesty I must say my VBX text book is an excellent way to get up
to speed. As always with a programming system it's deciding what to leave
out and what to put in. I think it fits the level it's aiming at, allowing
plenty of room for extension. You would be fine using 2010 with my book. As
always I'm happy to offer any support.
3. With VBX 2010 you have to register each copy. But you get just the one
registration key per email address. So one key will do for all
installations. With VBX 2008 you don't need to do that. It is still
available and more that adequate for your needs. Whichever one you use I
would download the iso file, transfer to a DVD and do your install manually.
4. ?
There's always somewhere new and interesting to go. I'm toying with
Objective-C at the moment (but still up to my elbows in VB).
regards,
Graeme

A few questions.
1. Graeme, asking as a died-in-the-wool fossil who may be retiring within
a year or two, how much different is VB Express compared to VB6? In other
words, how much learning is needed to get up to speed with Express?
2. Graeme, the current version of VB Express is the 2010 version. How
compatible is that with your VB Express textbook?
3. Anyone - presumably VB Express is free for schools, as well.
Correct? If so, how does the techie access it and install it across the
network, legally? Download one copy, register it, and put that one copy
across the network? Or is it trickier than that?
4. An unrelated question - is there a one-to-one correspondence between
members of the email list and the Edna forum? Do I reach the same people
either way?
TIA for any replies.
Rex
PS I'm still hoping there is a magic way to get VB6 to work on my
Windows 7 64-bit Professional and on our school laptop, as I have 10 years
of resources I have developed for it. So far no one has said 'impossible'
so I am still hoping ...

Rex,
You really are one of the VB6 survivors, but I'm sure you'd love VB
Express.
One of the major advantages, from an educational view, is that the kids
can
download it for free on their home computers.
regards,
Graeme

Subject: [qsiteict] Visual Basic 6.0 and Windows 7?
I have just tried to install my trusty (well it was trusty) version of
Visual Basic 6.0 onto my home computer (Windows 7 64-bit OS) and was told
that it was not compatible. I then tried to install it on my Education
Queensland C4T laptop (Windows 7 Enterprise Edition), and was unsuccessful
there as well.
We have Windows 7 on on the school computers (not sure of the version),
so I am getting a bit worried.
Are any schools using Visual Basic 6.0 on a network with a Windows 7
operating system? If so, any problems? If so, any solutions?
Cheers
Rex
