We have been doing selected exams on the computer quite successfully in both
IPT and ITS as well as in the Middle School. We use a separate "exam" login for
the students so that we restrict their access to their personal network folder
and other personal resources. We are also able to restrict access to the
internet or Blackboard if desired.
Blackboard provides some very good opportunities for multiple choice and short
response questions. The multiple choice, true/ false, fill-in-the-blank
questions are all self-marking on Blackboard. What a bonus for some middle
school exams.
Programming questions in IPT and HTML and design questions in ITS work very
well online.

Hi Rex,

We've been doing our IT exams online for a while now and simply set up the exam
as a form in Word, which lets you have drop down boxes for multiple choice
questions, etc.

We experimented with a few ideas (and still are) and have found that it works
best if you have a separate exam account login for each child. At the end of
the exam copy these to a write only location that students can't access so you
have a copy of them. Some people like to lock the exam accounts after the
exam. I like to have control of the exam accounts because there are usually
students who have to do the exam at different times - I can put exams in the
accounts and take them out as needed.

If you give them Internet access during an exam you have to be extremely
vigilant in your supervision. It can be done but it's difficult to ensure the
integrity of the exam.

Cheers,
Kym

Subject: [qsiteict] IPT Exams done in Word, and with Structorizer

With the exception of the end-sem exam last year, all of my "written"
IPT exams have been done with
pen/pencil and paper, and with NS Diagrams and CSDs hand-drawn.

What I am thinking about doing this term is having the students do the written
exam (on programming) in a computer room, using Word, and using the on-line
version of Structorizer to do their NS-Diagrams, or at least the more complex
ones.

The students will be using separate exam accounts and not their own school
accounts, and will need Internet access to use Structorizer.

Has anyone does this before? Can anyone see any problems that might arise?

Cheers

Rex
