I would simply contend that without the UN this transition would not have had the aura of the validity which enjoys today. Many people inside the region still view the interim government as a stooge of the United States, but at least with the help of the UN they have a sense that it is a viable government. Wait until you have read Plan of Attack and you may reassess some of these thoughts. Pay particular attention to Colin Powell's prognostications.
