My friend, a victim of ADEM and/or MS finally has an evaluation
appointment at the Rancho Los Amigos rehab center in Downey, CA.40 miles
from his nursing home.We were told Medi-Cal will not pay for
transportation so his mother is getting an Access (Los Angeles
transportation for the disabled) van. Now, despite my anticipation at his
finally having a chance to see doctors that can really help him, I’m
having nightmares. The furthest trips he’s made in 12 years is to his
mom’s home which is only 8 miles distant and, in those cases, he is
seated vertically. What if he gets motion sickness or gets nauseous from
anxiety?Do we need a respiratory therapist with us?Would Medicare or
Medi-Cal reimburse us for that?Should he have anti-nausea meds before
the trip or is there some we could add through his PEG tube, if need
be.Is there a chance the anti-nausea meds might weaken him so he
couldn’t get a good evaluation at Rancho or. . . ?It goes on and on.Does
anyone have any experience with this?Or can you recommend a doctor in
the West San Fernando Valley who is really qualified to help
quadriplegics (including referring them to specialists who have
experience with quads (for example not just an ENT, but an ENT that is
experienced with trachs and speaking valves) or to an orthopedic doctor
or a doctor of physical medicine who can recommend the right head
support (including anterior and lateral) so a person with no head
control can see objects on his wheelchair tray?
Thank you for your help.
