I had the exaxt issue. My chair repair shop bypassed that safty feature so it 
no longer works.
I have to back in the side door. Only problem is once I came in too fast and 
crashed into the inside of the van. The handlebar on the back of the chair went 
straight through the big side window. Shattered glass everwhere.
