The experiment with the external HD (containing 7.5.5 update) was
ambivalent. The external startup drive did not even see the 7100's hard
drive. It did not produce an icon for the CD-Rom drive but I'm not sure
how to interpret that under the circumstances.
At this point I'm going to purchase a cleaning disk for the CD-Rom
reader. After using that I guess I'll ponder reinstalling the system
software or possibly taking the reader apart for a cleaning/examination.
I'm still flabbergasted by the idea that time after time, without
variation the CD-Rom drive will accept and deal with the emulated disk
(although the computer won't open the files on it) and just as
consistently will not acknowledge the Mac formatted disks. Are those
the symptoms of a mechanical problem? Wouldn't a drive with a
mechanical problem be a little less selective than that? I'm not trying
to be disputatious here, but I am genuinely perplexed. Regards, John.
