I've been looking at putting a *nix on my Q650 and I decided to go with
NetBSD. I can't give any great technical reason for the decision, it was
more down to the fact that NetBSD is specifiically meant to be cross
platform where linux isn't and therefore it appears to be more 'current'
ie the Mac68k version of NetBSD is at 1.6.1 (the same as the current
release for any platform) whereas Linux appears to be mostly on Kernel
2.2 with 2.4 still needing some work (and no mention of 2.6). Also, I
think it's kind of fun for my ancient mac to run a 'cousin' of
Darwin/OSX. :-)

Thanks Scot, I've got a C650 running Debain and a Q700 running Netbsd.
I find Debain faster and easier but I am bias. Currently having trouble updating deb to 3.x with XFree 4.1.x, no biggy as you dont really need X but it was on of the things that helped me choose deb in the first place over Netbsd, I guess I'm looking for new reasons to try Netbsd again
I hope to meet the specs to try out the pc version of Darwin soon. ;)

One thing though, linux will have some advatages ove NetBSD (it looks
like it might have better support for colour under X, but I'm not sure)
and vice versa. It would really be interesting to see a comparison of
the two. I'm planning on getting another drive for the 650, maybe I'll
throw linux on it one day and compare them myself.

Unfortunately I can't really give you a good comparision. Debian was easy to setup having other linux boxes compared to my lack of knowledge about Netbsd. I do get colour at 1024x768 off the C650, though Netbsd is stuck in mono, again this maybe me more than Netbsd.
As for speed the C650 beats the Q700 to begin with so the comparsion is flawed to begin with.

Other folks have mentioned the new Netbsd improves disk access and allows for LC040 (yuck) cpu's. The new version is something I haven't tried yet.

Personally, a program like Exodus on the Quad's with a linux (maybe BSD?) box on the lan is much more rewarding than a stand alone nix distro on the Quad, unless the Quad is doing some sort of dedicated job of coarse.

Very happy using MDK for pci macs and pc's.

Cheers
