Ok, could be a faulty rev counter then, measure the voltage between ground and the green wire with the engine running, there should be some voltage there, exactly what will depend on your meter.
If your meter has a RPM range then you should be able to read the rpm directly.
If you've continuity from the dash to the Edis module then the suppressor must be ok.

Ok, had some more time with the multi meter, found the circuit between
the edis and the tacho is okalso the three wires from the coil to the
edis are ok, the green wire from the tacho/ speedo assembly is open
cicuit when tested to earth any ideas anyone?

there is a green wire on the edis, though the coil wires are not
coloured as shown in the manual there is a green/yellow a green/red
and what looks to be black or brown. I will have to test from the
speedo plug to the green on the edis to prove wether its on the wiring
or internal on the edis, the manual also shows a suppressor in the
circuit, don't know where that is, perhaps that is whats failed?

Only if it has internal Edis, on the ones with external Edis it still
come from the edis module on a green wire.

If there isn't a green wire on the actual Edis connector strip the loom
back a few inchs, sometimes it's spliced into one of the 2 coil wires
further up the loom.

Doesn't the rev counter hook up to the ECU on the zetec?

hello Q fans, I have the same problem with my H4, and have previously
tested with the multi-meter and found there is no circuit between the
green wire on the multi plug behind the speedo and the wiring on the
coil pack, it is the 1800 zetec engine, does anyone know if there is
anything that would be bypassed in the circuit if I run a wire from
the clocks milti plug direct to the coil. I had the same problem on
the oil light, but running a seperate wire relit the bulb, can't find
any damage on the loom though, cheers Bill.

Ok, thats fairly easy.
The rev counter signal goes from the revcounter to the -ve terminal on
the ignition coil via a green wire, the only one in that area.
It may go via a plug in filter mounted near the coil which is connected
via a 2 pin bullet type connector, this may be missing.

So the first thing to check is that wire, check it end to end with a
meter set to continuity with the instrument cluster unplugged.
