During my latter years at Ford I noticed the rear brake flexi fixing points had migrated from a sensible location (near to suspension arm pivot point for example on Mk2 Fiesta, meaning little change to the hose length during suspension movement ) to a location on the bodywork near the axle centreline, meaning the movement of the suspension gave huge changes to the angle/length - Why this occurred is a mystery to me - perhaps it gave easier assembly on the production line? ----- Original Message ----- From: Hamish Freeman To: quantumowners@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, August 27, 2010 1:43 PM Subject: Re: [Quantum Owners] H4 rear brake pipes
The build manual instructs one to pop rivet these brackets into an exact location. On my H4 almost all of the "locations" were marked by a small indentation in the fibreglass - excellent attention to detail, which I have not seen on other kits. I have however had problems with these brackets as they can restrict the movement of the hoses when the suspension is jacked up (e.g. brake servicing etc.) leading to kinked hoses - not good! I should add that I have a 40 mm extension at the lower end of the suspension struts to ensure that the spring carriers do not rub on the 60 section 15" wheels so this may not happen on the standard set-up. As a result, I remounted mine on a small bracket that bought them further out from the body and now have no problem of kinking when the suspension is jacked up. Any advice would be very welcome. The rigid part of the rear brakepipes connects to a flexible hose just in front of the rear wheels. The connection is through an L-shaped bracket which looks as if it was originally attached (glued?) to the bodywork. On both sides the bracket is detached from the bodywork. I have a photo if someone can advise how to attach a photo to a post. It was not commented on at the recent MOT so may not be an issue?? If I want to reattach the bracket should it be glued (if so with what), or should I drill a hole in it and the bodywork and bolt it?
