The reason for original Quantum not having the frames galvanised was due to
cost. I have Been advised that they had to be competitive with the rest of the
kit car world.
One way that I like to protect, and have done so now to quite a few cars is :-
shot blast, zinc plate (cold process no distortion) etch prime and then
polyurethane paint. Yes it's darn expensive. In fact zinc plating all the
metalwork on a coupe costs around £450 ! Then add paint on top. But it will
last over 20 years with no further attention.
The reason for the 2+2 having a metal frame at the front, was to save labour
costs in making the shell. It is very costly to make a full shell in GRP and as
you are all aware, the front end of the coupe is a complicated affair. It saves
much Time to weld up some square tubing and reduce laminating duties. However
it does mean that a front end collision costs a lot to replace the front, so I
would recommend that 2+2 owners really take up the agreed value option for your
insurance that our club has got for us. At least it should give us enough room
on costings to get a new front end made and sprayed.
Another reason that Quantum did not protect the metalwork further, is that they
really did not expect us to still be driving these cars at this age. A lot of
the cars that I deal with are now touching 20 years old. Lets be fair it's
amazing that our cars have been so good we still enjoy them now, most
production cars would never get this far.
Now lets get our cars to do another 20 years, with the help that we get from
our committee and the insurance companies, I really do hope that this happens
as I would hate to only have a production car and not a Quantum. It just would
not seam right.
