As I have mulled this over....
We know we can get a static screengrab. That screengrab can then be cropped,
filtered etc. This is implemented in stuff like the generic template for
screensavers in QC, and in many great compositions.

Is there a method with which we can refresh that screen grab in real time,
while the qtz. patch is in "run". Is that a possible way of accomplishing
this?

So the idea is, it would be something like the screengrab input patch in QC,
fed into crop, then whatever other filers are desired, and onto whatever
renderer.....

So you could open up an image of say, the flame particle in Processing,
program the recurring "screengrab" at something like 15 per second, run that
into a crop patch that crops to just the area of the screen you want... and
then feed that input into the rest of your Quartz Composer chain.

Is this a possible way of approaching it, or is my previous idea of just
taking screenshot video, and plopping the .mov file into QC the way to go?

Frankly, I have no problem plopping down $300 for something like VDJX (I
think that is the name....). It's just that I am irritated that it seems
like this should be able to be setup simply using the developer tools, or
even just built into OS X.

This is another thought.... an automator patch that would screengrab at
regular, very quick intervals? Then those still images could be made into a
movie file, cropped, etc.

Throwing stuff against the wall here.....
