Hi Folks,

Yes, I am listening to the discussions - the list hasn't been this busy in a long time.

Unfortunately, I cannot offer any advice why the MS wavetable synth isn't working. QWS uses the standard Windows function call to open MIDI ports. The typical reason why they don't open is if something else has already opened it.

That's very curious about getting Media player on board: I don't know why, if you start that first to play a MIDI, then QWS can open the port. Very odd.

So, sorry I haven't been much help with this. but there have been some very lively discussions about alternatives. Personally, I use my keyboards and sound moduels - no trouble with latency, version of drivers and huge downloads.

Best regards,

James.

PS regarding VST instruments, there is an article on the QWS website about how to set all this up.

Raymond, u do *so* know what you're talking about! & it confirms my
suspicion that perhaps not all is well w/the interaction between qws &
MS WaveTable, though having said thus, I personally have no such
problems. Maybe it has to do w/certain programs running on certain
systems. If any1 else is having similar issues, they should post to
the list to let James know. James, u listening to this discussion? Can
u give any insights? This is not just a simple matter of a newby who
doesn't know wuddup. He does. We've walked thru the steps, & though
Johnny is new to electronic music, he's very good w/a computer, & I'm
a technician of nearly 20 years experience. I owned the midimag list
for years, & many on that list can testify of the technical help I've
provided. I believe I can give very reasonable assurances that the
simple things have *not* been overlooked. I feel I've pretty much
ruled out the possibility of malware. I may ask Johnny to run 1 or 2
more diagnostics w/me, but there is definitely something amiss here,
as he is able to use the MS synth to play midi in other programs--just
not in qws. Raymond's experience also confirms that perhaps not all is
as it should be.

I will post back to the list when I find an alternative softsynth we
can experiment with. Meanwhile, I do encourage any1 having similar
issues to post & let the list know. Perhaps we can find out when this
problem occurs & either fix the systems in question or a fix can be
developed within qws.

Hi,
At the bottom of an earlier post, I mentioned trying to play a midi in media player and playing one in qws at the same time, then stopping media player.
That's what I had to do to fix mine. I had to do that every time I opened
qws.
That is a very odd problem though. It seems the microsoft synth gets turned off, and Windows media player or maybe another program can turn it back on.
Whether that's actually happening or not, I don't know, but that's how I
thought of it. I know I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm actually starting to wonder if there was a way to fix this problem which I
didn't know then, which I instinctively did now when I really started
learning about midi. Good luck with formulating plan B.

Actually, all that has been tried, w/o success. I guess I need to get
back w/plan b. I've gotta figure out what plan b might be.

Hello Johnny,
I believe I can help, although I'm not sure if this will work.
First, go into qws, go to the options menu, select ports. In here is a
list of all midi in and out ports. Arrow down to the microsoft gs
wavetable synth and make sure the use this port checkbox is checked.
That's all that we need to do here. This dialog only tells qws which
ports

it should use or not use. It does not tell it the default port to use.
Don't worry about what ports are selected in this dialog.
Press the okay button, then go to the options menu again, this time go
to
options, and press enter. Here is where we set the default port that
will
be used. Set this to microsoft and pres enter.
Now, the tricky part. Open a midi, and go to the track list box, it's
the
only list box there. Make sure it says microsoft gs wavetable synth at
the

very end of the name. You might have to maximize the window if the
track's

name is too long. If it says another midi device, which it shouldn't,
but
if it does, go to the track properties and set the port to microsoft.
If everything is in check, try to play it. If it doesn't play, then we
have a problem. So far i've only found one sollution, and even sometimes it doesn't work. open a midi in Windows Media Player or whatever program
you use to play midis. then go back to qws and play the file. If you
hear
both midis playing at the same time, then at least we're getting
somewhere. stop the file in media player. If the qws midi still plays,
then we're golden! If both midis stop, you might have to keep trying,
maybe just pausing it in media player instead of stopping. If you can't
get it to work no matter what, well then we're stuck. You could try
restarting qws, or the the computer, and seeing if that helps.
Oddly, this has only happened on one computer of mine. And, by
coincidence, that's the computer i have my keyboard hooked up to. Now I
just have to remember to make sure it's plugged in and turned on ...
Let me know if this has unlocked the door which is blocking the sound
from

Microsoft.

Good morning Jackie,

I'm wondering why after shutting down or re-booting, when starting QWS and going into options, ports, the port setting reverts back to "output
device." Down arrowing, displays Microsoft and tabbing to "use this
port" shows being checked.

In Control panel, sounds and audio devices under the audio tab shows
Realtek ac97 audio as being the default card for sound playing and
recording. Microsoft Wavetable is the only choice for midi playback,
and

use only defaults is checked.

Blessings,

Johnny

Johnny, When u go into options, then ports, then down arrow to the
microsoft wavetable synth, then tab twice, is the use this port
checkbox checked? If not, check that sucker.

Next, in control panel > sounds and audio devices, control tab to
"audio" & make certain your computer soundcard is set to be the
default.
