If I understand you correctly, your wanting to listen to how fast the chosen tempo is going to be before recording.
This is perfectly possible; if you turn the metronome on by pressing f4 and then press control + r to record, the metronome will start playing which should serve as a guide as to how fast you should play. Depending on how you have configgured the metronome, this may record some blank space, although since you get asked if you would like to keep the current recording after you stop recording, this shouldn't be much of a problem.
