I have been looking for such a thing myself, and I'm using XP SP3 here. I'm
not sure if this would work on newer operating systems, but for now, I use
the Roland Virtual Sound Canvas. As you might know, the Microsoft synth is
just a stripped down roland SC55 sound set. The roland virtual Sound Canvas
has all the same sounds, plus aroun 700 others, which by today's standards
sound awful but compared to the crappy thing Microsoft gives you, it's
pretty good. The roland VSC also has effects like reverb, chorus, and delay,
although the delay I never really use. The reverb and chorus are acceptable.
the sampling rate of the sounds is still 22 K, even if you go into VSC's
control panel and change it, you can here that they are just being resampled
from 22 to 44, and it does sound a little better that way.
Overall it's nothing to get excited about, but I was so desperate for
something better that I didn't complain when someone gave it to me.
Since you don't want vsts, that rules out the Yamaha SYXG50 VSTI, which I
also have, and use occasionally. You can try Timidity, a relatively old
synth that supports soundfonts, and installs itself as a midi device like
the creative synths, however Timidity has so many problems with reading
loops in some soundfonts, and accepting program changes, that I didn't use
it for long. It allows you to configure the effects, and to load midis and
convert them to audio, but the above problems didn't make it worth playing
with the rest.

Hi listers
I had upgraded my system to windows 7 pro on this netbook and really
am Missing the sound of the yamaha sxg 50 softsynth. I tried really
hard to install it using compatibility mode ETC but the thing just
will not work anymore, its quite outdated anyway, at least using my
configuration had failed. Xp service pack 2 with admin privilleges on
for setup but no luck at all. I have tried looking into the web and
have found a bunch of vst plug ins which are great but they imply the
oppening of another program and consequently more ram ETC ETC . so if
there is any other soft synth or such replacement for the gs wave
table from microsoft I would really apreciat your input. Note>
replacing the sound card will be veyr very hard to do because this
notebook has a realtec soundcard with USB jacks atatched to IT ETC so
I really do not know if there are any other higher quality midi
rendering cards out there that would work with this asus eee 1005ha .
