I did try to fix it and ended up having to reformat.
There is just no modern midisynths around.
One suggestion is getting something like synthfonts on winamp or xm
player there is a crappy one for cmedia I know of, and onj has one
and they may be others though you need loads of ram though in most
cases thats not a major issue anymore.

Well, I'm in your boat as far as the Yamaha SYXG50 goes. Being the
careless person I am, I tried to install the SYXG100 because I heard
it had better sounds. The thing didn't even install properly, either
the installer was broken or it had problems uninstalling my
pre-existing SYXG50, or a little of both. As a result, now i'm stuck
with no SYXG, except when I use the VST. I can't even reinstall
because the installer says that it's already installed but cannot
remove it. I've run registry cleaners, and tried to remove
everything I can myself. I also went into the registry and removed
any SYXG references but if I did any more I'd probably risk damaging
my system since i don't know enough about it. That's when I started
using the Roland VSC which has been working for the time being.
A keyboard is probably your best way to go as many others have said,
if you're willing to do that. I trust Yamaha and Roland to have some
good keyboards. All you really need to focus on are sounds and audio
capabilities, you don't need to have a library of instruments on the
keyboard unless you intend to do a decent amount of midi work on the keyboard.
As for buying a software synth, I would certainly buy one, but I
haven't looked around much. I'd have to make a wise choice though,
since I along with many others can't afford to buy every synth we
see, if they are even still being supported, which many aren't.
Idealy i'd get some soundfont driver. Then I can choose the sounds I
want to use. It all goes back to soundfonts or keyboards...
Okay, I'm done rambling. Let us know if you find something that works for you.

this is great information! the yamaha sxg works on xp with sp3, you
know. But then I come and install it here.. and then.. nothing
happens. the device just never shows. I would really dislike to have
to open 2 programs just to get decent quality in a midi file so your
option of thigns that the computer sees as internal synths is a great
idea, Ia m even willing to get some good interesting optoins even if
Ihave to buy them.

I have been looking for such a thing myself, and I'm using XP SP3 here. I'm
not sure if this would work on newer operating systems, but for now, I use
the Roland Virtual Sound Canvas. As you might know, the Microsoft synth is
just a stripped down roland SC55 sound set. The roland virtual Sound Canvas
has all the same sounds, plus aroun 700 others, which by today's standards
sound awful but compared to the crappy thing Microsoft gives you, it's
pretty good. The roland VSC also has effects like reverb, chorus, and delay,
although the delay I never really use. The reverb and chorus are acceptable.
the sampling rate of the sounds is still 22 K, even if you go into VSC's
control panel and change it, you can here that they are just being resampled
from 22 to 44, and it does sound a little better that way.
Overall it's nothing to get excited about, but I was so desperate for
something better that I didn't complain when someone gave it to me.
Since you don't want vsts, that rules out the Yamaha SYXG50 VSTI, which I
also have, and use occasionally. You can try Timidity, a relatively old
synth that supports soundfonts, and installs itself as a midi device like
the creative synths, however Timidity has so many problems with reading
loops in some soundfonts, and accepting program changes, that I didn't use
it for long. It allows you to configure the effects, and to load midis and
convert them to audio, but the above problems didn't make it worth playing
with the rest.

Hi listers
I had upgraded my system to windows 7 pro on this netbook and really
am Missing the sound of the yamaha sxg 50 softsynth. I tried really
hard to install it using compatibility mode ETC but the thing just
will not work anymore, its quite outdated anyway, at least using my
configuration had failed. Xp service pack 2 with admin privilleges on
for setup but no luck at all. I have tried looking into the web and
have found a bunch of vst plug ins which are great but they imply the
oppening of another program and consequently more ram ETC ETC . so if
there is any other soft synth or such replacement for the gs wave
table from microsoft I would really apreciat your input. Note>
replacing the sound card will be veyr very hard to do because this
notebook has a realtec soundcard with USB jacks atatched to IT ETC so
I really do not know if there are any other higher quality midi
rendering cards out there that would work with this asus eee 1005ha .
