Hi,
Basssmidi uses soundfonts. It supports effects like reverb, filters, chorus, and some system exclusive messages. My favorite font for general purpose is SGM, it's the best GM set I've seen overall but there are some instruments which I find simply intolerable. But these exist with every gM soundfont. Other smaller soundfonts are available on the 'net as well. There are even some of the Microsoft synth but some of the volume envelopes are a bit off and depending on which font you get, some tuning issues as well, so I wouldn't recommend relying on those. You can search for some GM soundfonts. some are partialy GS as well and there are other banks which have their own mappings.
Bassmidi can be found here:

Let me know if you need soundfont resources, but doing a few minutes of searching will get you many soundfonts, as they are pretty easy to find. Enjoy!

Good to know. How good is the General MIDI implementation on it? And where's
a reliable place to find it?

Hi,
That Microsoft synth is famous for having latency issues. There's
nothing you can do I'm afraid. You'll probably want to use another
synth, Bassmidi version 1.06 is my favorite. It has the least latency
and doesn't have any problems on any machines that I've seen. But
version 2.02 is good too, just with a bit more latency and not much new
that I can see. The only real difference is that the playback seems to
studder less often when loading soundfont samples, but I'd still
recommend 1.06.

I'm getting noticeable latency from my Axiom to the sound source, which is
just the Microsoft wavetable synth. Any thoughts?
