I've got BSMIDI loaded now, just need to track down some fonts.

Yes, with the Bassmidi driver. Or you can use the VST plug-in called SFZ 
but I personally think Bassmidi does better. They both have effects like 
reverb and chorus and support for other GS and XG controllers. Or you 
could use synth Font which doesn't have any effects, at least no 
built-in ones, but that thing has evolved over the years to become a 
clunky piece of almost inaccessible software which bassmidi easily beats 
for your purpose.
SFZ does work well on some things, the Onj font in particular. But since 
that's not GM,, I'd assume you wouldn't really need that font.
