It is also important to perform a gm, gm2, gs, or xg reset, when loading
a new file. The type of reset depends on your midi device and what it
supports, but sometimes it doesn't work. seems like some devices filter
those messages or something. But if it does work, it will help correct
some of those nasty errors if some controllers are not properly reset,
which is often the case. There's also a single controller which I hear
will do it, I think is cc 120 or something but I haven't used it, even
though it is good practice to put one in every midi you make just ensure
it plays properly. Again I don't know for sure what number it is or if
it works as well as I think it does.

Hi Liz,
To add to what has already been written:
Yes, you can put a program change message anywhere you like in any
track to change the sound. Ideally, I recommend that you set up all
tracks by using the Init. Properties command on the Track menu. The
shortcut is Alt+Enter. This will select the settings that you want, at
the start of each track. It's best if you fill in all the boxes
(unless you will never use some). Making sure that all the boxes are
filled in will mean that you don't get any nasty errors when you load
a new song and have settings left over from the previous one.
There is nothing to stop you adding further program changes part-way
through the track. You can do this either using the Change Properties
command (again on the Track menu), or using the Editors or even in
some cases, by pressing the buttons on your music keyboard.
It's also worth checking, if you have more than one track in your
song, generally, they should all have different MIDI channels (again,
set this in the Initial Track Properties).
If you want to remove program changes from part-way through a track,
you can do this either with Tools or with Editors.
I hope this helps, let us know how you get on.
With best regards,
James.

Sounds like you have a program change in there somewhere. You'll want to
filter them out. Check the documentation on removing controller messages.

Interesting I got the instrument to change but it seems not at the
beginning
of the song. Does the song have to be playing or can I just switch the
instrument settings without being in the track itself? Thanks. I
supposedly switched from piano to accordian uust to try it out and it
played
the first 12 bars in piano still lol Liz

Sure. MIDI program changes can fall anywhere in a track. You can use the
track properties (Alt+enter if I remember correctly) to set your
instrument.
What are you using for your sound source? You'll want the correct
instrument
definition file for what you're using.

Hi: I am trying to change the default instrument sound from the piano
sound
to the oboe if possible. I seem to be able to change it part way through
the song but is there a way I can change it right from the beginning and
for
all subsequent tracks? Thanks.
