That's rather lame, IMO.  I understand & support the idea of proof of
purchase, rules are rules.
But when it is OBVIOUS that a product cannot be past it's warranty
period (1 yr warranty, first product sales less than six months ago)
then this just flies in the face of reason and common sense.

Did you try emailing US support?  May not do you any good, but I'd at
least try that route.   :( 

If all else fails you may have to try to obtain a receipt from the gift
giver, as uncomfortable as that may be.
