I know I would be uncomfortable if I went camping with a female commander
even if she wasn't the only leadership there.

This is where my wife and I have a great solution. My wife and I are the
commander and lt. commander of our Trailblazer-Challenger Patrol. She is a
wonderful asset to have in our classroom. She motivates the boys where I
never could. I had this same group of boys on my own for 3 years, they
never wanted to do anything. Oh I had a couple who worked. But out of 12
boys that's ridiculous. When my wife started helping being our outpost
secretary she "REALLY SAW" the problems I was having. Basically it was a
glorified babysitting nite. After a while I asked her to help me with the
points and general book work in class. The problem is I had forgotten that
she had been in girl scouts for 12 years, missionettes for 9 years (earn her
honor star-old type), and help 4 other boys get their GMA. SHe knew her
stuff. I started teaching a lashing segment and she quietly approached me
during recreation time. She showed me that I was doing it wrong. So now we
have this system. She teaches: lashing, firecraft, nature, and general
merit work. I teach: ropecraft, compass, first aid, general ranger
knowledge, fcf, toolcraft. It has worked for 2 years now. She is fully a
part of out patrol with one acception. She does not go camping with us.
She takes us to the drop points. Makes sure we have everything. Sometimes
helps us set up camp. But she does not stay overnight at camp. We have
talked about having a campout where she would stay. She would have her own
area. But we have not pressed it. I hope this helps. I feel that
sometimes male commanders can care for the boys and find that they are
hurting as easy as women. That's just one of the many things that God
blessed women with. These past 2 years have been great working with my wife
in my class. Since she has been there the entire class has earned their God
and Life award, 1 GMA recpient, and 3 more on their Master rating.

God bless.
