This is not too complicated, but it has some expense.
With remote desktop and a Microsoft Terminal server, you can run
you existing application without modification. Using Remote Desktop
to connect into a terminal server, you will see excellent speed while
maintaining total control locally. I have 3 users work on a server
located 3 states away. Only problem I have is when the internet
goes down. (Which does not cause a problem with the database,
because the session keeps running on the server. When the
user reconnects back in, they are right where they left off when
disconnected)
Expenses are Windows Terminal Server, a remote access license for each
user and a PC of sufficient power to run. For instance, in one case,
I have 8 users running a large compiled Rbase application on a
Windows 2000 terminal server on an older Dell Series 700 server, 2.8 GHZ,
1 gig ram and the users never complain about speed. It has been very dependable
and works great. I am getting ready to obtain about 5 thin clients to
use on it versus full PC's. They are less expensive than full PC's and
include the remote desktop license.
So I believe your best bet would be terminal services. There are other
non-Micro soft options such as Citrix as well. However, I do not fell
you would be satisfied with PCAnywhere and do not really recommend
it. I use it for a few minor client support cases, but would not want to
run it on a daily basis.

List,Need some advice and ideas.I have a complicated application residing on a server. The client wants others to be able to access this application over the web from off-site locations.A web app is out of the question, I do not have the time nor expertise to recreate this, it is constantly moving target!Solo .How do I allow multiple (maybe 5 or more) users to use this application over the web? Will remote desktop allow multiple users? Is there a third party product that does this?Do I need a bank of remote PCs attached to the server for each user to access?A couple years ago, I was hoping that client server would do this, but I guess moving forms and data over the web is too slow. The R:Base application tools and forms are just so easy and superior. I have not seen a web app that can work like this. If I had the time, maybe, but this is too far along to re-write and have all the rules and form doodads recreated.Any ideas appreciated, I am speaking to a network guy tomorrow sometime and wanted some ideas.TIABob CRobert M.
