I believe teamviewer is like remote desktop. It only allows one desktop
connection.

Dave,

I just tried ‘TeamViewer’ at the suggestion of a local IT group. Put it on my
machine at work and went home for lunch. From my home computer ,which is on a
wired cable system, I connected to my desktop at work within 5 minutes. My home
computer screen showed on my work screen with all the shortcuts. Ran the work
based complied R:Base database as fast as if I was back at work. Printed a 20
page report to our main printer at work with no lag. We are going to try
several of these products. Still plan on setting up a secure network system for
all the usual reasons.

Tom: You might also take a look at Go-Global from GraphOn (graphon.com) which
is somewhat like Remote Desktop or Citrix, but is very easy to setup and also
does not require a "server" for smaller offices (up to 10 users on a desktop)
and very easy to maintain. It is application virtualization, and the end-user
will see a small menu of apps that you've "published" when they login. When
they run your R:base app it will appear just like it does locally and this is
an extremely easy way to web-enable applications. We have a couple of
clients running this with various database applications, and our in-house
compiled R:base application runs well with it. The vendor also has an iPad
client which works well and an Android client coming soon.

Thanks for the info. This project keeps drifting into new knowledge territory
for me. Your suggestions are what I am looking for.

Tom,

To chime in on the subject of VPN, we use Cisco for remote users. They use
Windows Remote Desktop to login to their respective workstations at the office.
Their experience is the same as sitting at their desk. They also use a
shortcut to the compiled applications. Personally, I login remotely through
VPN to the domain controller server where a full copy of R:BASE (V8) is
installed and I only experience a mild rubber band effect. I have no problem
working on the database itself although I prefer to make changes locally and
after testing, upload the changes to the database server.

After several years of running our in-house, wired system, we are headed out
the door into the real world with 4-5 sites away from our main facilities and
multiple wireless laptops. Database itself seems to be running well. We will
use a network specialist to help with all the hookups and security issues with
combinations of cable/DSL/wireless Internet. The monthly service charges will
not be cheap. Is there anything in particular related to R:Base we should be
very aware of? Looked through the User group archive. VPN has speed problems
compared to terminal servers so I am looking at things like using variables in
views to limit rows transmitted to the specific rows needed. To get into our
system a password is required and a computer’s name must be registered in the
database. Using compiled 9.1 64 (0103 updates) which drops unregistered users
immediately. Our plan is to go slow, use my home and our IT guy’s home as the
initial connections, then move from there. Any suggestions appreciated.
