Mike:

To find our what's really going on, put an exit EEP on the field in question
and have it display the characters in the field, one by one. You want to
find out if they are 32s, 152s, or whatever.

A possible short-term fix would be to figure out exactly what is in the
field when the ys display, then, in the exit EEP for that field, if the
culprit characters are detected, change the value to be a NULL (if the field
is a column, you will have to change it to a variable, and assign the column
value in the expression list).

In general, you probably want your users to get out of the habit of thinking
they can use a string of spaces to blank out the field -- although R:Base
will generally make the translation for you the values really are distinct.
Other programs are not so forgiving.
