One more remark: Any problem I've had with brakes has been, largely, in the rear. But the new non-spiral brake cable (it looks like a beefier indexing deraileur cable) is highly un-compressible (that's an awkward phrasing!) and makes a huge difference for the formerly mushy rear mechanical disk on my mountain bike -- this I know is just one data point.
