Greetings, I'm building up a Bombadil and have yet to decide on a new crank, but I really only have 3 to choose from as I use 185mm arms. The 3 are a TA Carmina, Surly Mr. Whirly, and the High Sierra/Zinn Custom ones.
For the heck of it today I put in a spare 122mm UN-72 BB and put on my road bikes Zephyr crank to see how it fit. Well, it didn't come close, the axle was too short and I have 26/44/48 rings on it. It looks like the middle has to be a 36. So I tried a 127mm BB(+1.5mm spacer DS), and it seems like it would work , as the 26 clears by a few mm's. But, I don't think I want to use use this for this bike, as my road bike setup is perfect and I don't really want to go changing things if I don't have to. I could call this a distant 4th crank option. I noticed the chainline was a bit wider than the Zephyr's 45mm. It looks like a 47.5 or so will do. One of my choices for a new crank was Surly's Mr. Whirly. I had inquired about it a few month's ago, and they kindly even measured the Q for me and explained that there were 3 axles length's for it, the shortest for a 47.5mm chainline. The Q for the short spindle was 161mm, which is as good as possible these days. Even my Zephyr with the 127mm BB is 160mm. So look, I've never been one for measuring anything chainline, just use eyeball or use a straight edge and see how it looks. . trying to keep the crank as far inward as possible. With the Surly though, because it uses the outboard bearings, the chainline not very tweakable. The only moving around would be one 2.5mm spacer from right side to left, giving it a 45mm chainline, but that's too close for this frame. What I'm wondering is for those with Bombadil's or any Rivendell frame with the Sugino XD triple and Tange 107mm or 110mm BB .. . . could you measure the chainline? I'd like to know because if it's around the 47.5mm mark, then I can consider the Surly crank. I'd appreciate it greatly if anyone could do that. . . or if you have any other bright ideas please share them.
