Priceless advice, thank you. I am going to try each recommendation, methodically. The seatpost is a Kalloy Uno, and the frame is (probably) Reynolds steel tubing, so I think that is a chrome finish on steel. If that's so, ammonia will is probably contraindicated, but I will try that, too, if all else fails.
