I'm definately sold on the idea of a dedicated single-speed chainring (I 
think that is what a "narrow-wide" is) for my big ring.  I've been using 
the stock middle ring on my modern Deore crankset and my riding is tame 
enough that I haven't had any chain drops.  I'm moving away from that 
crankset (for reasons related to knee pain) but I would have eventually 
replaced it with a single-speed ring.
