FWIW, Rivendell is selling exactly the same hub, 32/36H, <http://www.rivbike.com/Wheels-Hubs-So-On-s/53.htm> for fifteen bucks less than Intelligent Design. You pays your money, and you takes your choice.
These are the same SP (Shutter Precision) <http://sp-dynamo.com> dynamos that a lot of places are selling. I've been riding an earlier generation for several years: An SV-7 with a clutch mechanism to disengage the generator when not needed. This hub was originally sold with Velo Orange branding before SP started selling direct under their own name. The hub has been very reliable, with somewhere around 8,000 miles over the last four years. The only service I've had to have done about 18 months ago, and it was clutch-related; the clutch mechanism unscrewed a little, and shifted the generator contacts enough to dramatically reduce the power and increase the racket. I sent the thing back to VO (who wouldn't get SP to sell me the oddball socket to remove the locknut); they Loctited the clutch in place per SP's instructions - apparently, I got an early revision of the model, and SP later changed the design to eliminate the problem. The clutch-equipped hubs have since been discontinued. Since the post-service rebuild, I've been leaving the generator engaged all the time. The bike it's on is my around-town pack mule, so I haven't noticed any disturbing vibration or drag, beyond what the bike otherwise has. My previous front hub was an old steel-body Phil Wood, and I couldn't tell the difference with the first generator wheel at all, when I rode it with the generator disengaged prior to buying appropriate lights. Like Patrick, if money was no object, I too might buy SON simply for the established length of service. But at less than half the price, my SP shows no signs of failing any time in the foreseeable future. And with the latest-gen Busch&Muller LEDs (Luxos U, Toplight Line Plus), I ride bright enough for cars to flash their highbeams at me.
