It's very unlikely Grant has a good reason why the fender mounting points are superior placed the way they are on your bike. Consider that flaw as part of your bike's personality. If you can't stand it or feel cheated by this flaw, call Rivendell and tell them what it will take to make you happy. Very likely they will do it.
My best guess at an explanation is that the supplier kind of goofed, and RBW probably elected to take the shipment. They do need to keep the doors open, after all. Rivs vendors, like many humans, are imperfect.
