as far as the bell thing, every bike here has a bell, for pedestrians, deer 
and squirrels (no kidding).  
Last year, my carbon-bike buddy was hit by a deer and broke his arm and 
collar bone.  
He didn't have a bell and I e-mailed him that he should.  
Deer stop dead in their tracks at the sound of a bike bell, including a 
200lb buck that was charging across my path when I was doing over 40 
downhill (had been followed by a pickup for 3 miles because we were 
exceeding the speed limit)
