I have Schwalbe Marathon Supremes on my Disc Trucker commuter and Stampede
Pass ELs on my Rambouillet. If I decided tomorrow to take the GAP/C&O path
to Washington DC, I'd take the Ram and its ELs.

I just love the ride of those tires, with each pedal stroke, that I'd
happily carry an extra (have one still in package in the tool box) and
repair kits on bike in case. My last flat, notably, was on the commuter's
rear wheel despite the tire selection which I made in deference to avoiding
planning time for flat repair into my commute since I'm already leaving at
6 am for 14 hours.

Riding on my time, I don't perseverate over potential flatting or tire
failure, it's part of what I'm out there doing. Different when I'm on a
schedule or other people's time. If I am responsible for being on a
schedule I will add contingency time which I balance with and with which
temper my equipment choices.

As an interesting comparison, I got rid of a car that came with run flat
tires as its contingency. I don't drive places that are proximate to tire
retailers that are open 24/7 hours and stock that brand/size replacement,
so the idea of being stranded by a tire failure was real. That is unless I
put a spare one in the trunk myself, which is what the manufacturer should
have done in the first place instead of making (the famously great
handling) car ride like a Conestoga wagon on those ridiculous RFTs. Not a
workable paradigm for me and interestingly similar to my bike tire view.
