Hey Paul! Is it possible you are responding to what I didn’t say as if it is
what I did say? I’m not saying switch to single speed, only that riding single
speed occationally will help you understand your gearing. Since you have two
years under your belt of fixed riding, a muscle memory reminder may help you
“know what you know,” if that makes sense.

“I'm still unclear whether it is better to push tall gears, something I've
often done, or train to spin at a higher cadence.” Yes to both. Grin. But in a
way that is sustainable. Aerobic breathing and heart rate, anaerobic muscle
push through legs and arms. You mention mud and rain. Riding in mud is
eqivilant to climbing hills. The trick is (no matter the gearing) to have
aerobic power, because anaerobic power is unsustainable for more than a few
minutes.

With abandon,
Patrick
