if friction, stick with 9s. if index/trigger shifters, 9 or 10 is fine. 
9speed components will be cheaper on average. sunrace makes great wide 
range cassettes for either 9 or 10 speed (or 11, for that matter). my crust 
evasion with 1x11 (sram rival shifter, GX rear der, XT 11-42 cassette) 
pictured.
