Michael, We use SRAM and KMC 9 speed chains. Both shift well. Because I am frugal I made my own chain tools: Took a pair of small scissors and Dremeled out a radius on both blades of the scissors. Grab the chain with the 'tool', squeeze the links with your fingers and the chain breaks. You can buy the tool as well.
