The stuff collects at the bottom of the crockpot and, if you exercise sufficient care and don't stir up the wax when you remove the chain, I daresay it stays on the bottom and leaves only clean wax to penetrate the innards of the chain. I'm still on the same 1 1/2 pint of mineral spirits I first decanted for parts cleaning 2 years or so ago -- I just let the gunk settle to the bottom.
