OK, apologies for tangentially-related anecdotes, but I want to name
two other companies that come close in terms of customer service and
general stand-behind-it-ness: Domke and Xtracycle.
Domke makes various camera bags here in the US. Their classics are
thick cotton canvas that aren't waterproof per se but can absorb a lot
of water and keep it away from your gear. They can be waxed, and you
can buy them waxed. I have about 6 of them for various kinds of
adventures.
I had one that had a strap that had torn a bit and was separating,
probably from rubbing against my belt for 6 years most days. I emailed
Domke (in Long Island, New York) and asked if they knew a local
tailor/seamstress who could work with canvas this thick and either fix
or replace the strap. They replied asking for a receipt; I replied
that there's not point because I had had it for at least 6 years and
their warranty doesn't go back that far. They asked me to send the bag
in so they could inspect the tear, and a few days later I got a brand
new one in the mail.
Same thing happened with Xtracycle - I asked which model would replace
my no-longer made cargo bike bags with deteriorating lining, and they
said basically "don't bother buying them - we'll send you a new pair.
We don't like that yours wore out so quickly" even though I left them
out in the weather all day every day (and was open about it).
