Interesting comparison between BF and Dahon -- not that I know Fridays, but I've always thought of them as "real" bikes, and thought Dahons suffer all sorts of compromises because of their folding design and price points. While my Dahon Hon Solo -- an upper-end chromo limited edition model -- is decent and, after many modifications, is pleasant to ride, it certainly does not feel lively compared to my "real" bikes.
That said, I also have never found my Dahon darty or awkward in handling -- I've used 30 mm-or-so Kojaks and, presently, 40 mm-or-so PowerBands (the PBs are nicer. Am I right in thinking that these are simply variations on the Power Block?). It handles like a non-optimum road bike and, in fact, the sluggishness that I feel compared to my Rivs and Matthews has to do with pedaling effort. (Again, the PowerBands roll a bit better than the Kojaks, and those rolled a lot better than the horrible OEM Marathon Racers. And, note, that my drivetrain (obviously) is ss fixed; no great weight in the rear. Question: Do you other Dahon owners find that it is hard to adjust the main boom-tube hinge perfectly, and once adjusted, keep it that way? Even when I adjust it frighteningly tight and locktite the adjustment nut, the hinge always develops at least a wee bit of play after a few miles. Is this tiny "wiggle" play normal for Dahons? Patrick Moore, who has considered having a frame builder weld the frame joint in place permanently ... (but who, instead of doing that, should invest in VO's new small-wheel frame).
