My experience is just like Laing's, the whole chainstay is wrapped and I 
didn't notice for months. 

What I believe Grant means by "slap guard" is those old timey braze-ons 
touring bikes used to have that you would stretch a piece of leather 
between. He's not a stickler for paint staying pretty and probably thinks 
the clear stuff isn't necessary, either.*

*In fact he'd probably be appalled at how pristine my custom still is after 
a year and a half. I don't like scratches! 😬
