Thanks, John. You are right, 100% cotton doesn’t stink as quickly as
synthetics (but it does far more quickly than wool), and I’ve ridden many
miles in cotton shirts, but while it wicks moisture very well it also holds
it so that I who sweat heavily even at 5% humidity end up at my destination
with big dark sweat patches under arms, around neck, and on chest and back.
The “quick dry” synthetics I’ve also used also wick — perhaps not quite as
well as good cotton — but they also dry much more quickly.

I experience this quality of cotton to absorb and then hold moisture with
my cotton cycling caps, which I use not only to shade eyes from the
dazzling Georgia O’Keefe sun and dusty wind but to act as moisture dumps,
and the caps do this very well, far better than sweat bands. But while they
absorb it, they also hold it and even a high and forward position exposed
to the wind doesn’t dry them out even at 5%.

Years ago I had a large stable of boldly patterned rayon Hawaiian shirts
and found that these breathed and wicked well and didn’t hold moisture, and
they resisted stink almost as well as wool. But I could never find them in
other than baggy and I prefer more trim shirts for riding. Besides, they
clash with my retro team caps.

But good to know that Target is offering decent cotton shirts at a decent
price. Must go look at them.
