I have found that the iphone app mapmyride+ has worked very well.  I have
been using it for about a month.  I usually just start it put it back in my
seat bag and turn it off when I finish.  It will give basics such as total
miles, avg speed, max speed and generates a map of your route.  You can go
to their website and login (free or you can pay to remove ads) and view the
map of your route and even do a google fly-by that it is pretty cool.  You
can also check your stats for the month or even map out a ride that you plan
to do and view the elevation.   One other interesting feature of the iphone
app is the "Live" part.  You can permit whom ever you want to this feature
and they can see the map of your route in real time.
