Grant should add these to the Riv catalogue -- best historical novels
I've come across: the Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin Royal Navy series,
about 2 dozen spanning the years 1803 to about 1815 and the career of
the former from his first command to his appointment as a low level
Admiral. No steel, but wool and wood and linen in plenty and a very
sophisticated "learn the ropes" technology to keep a sailing ship
moving across the globe by wind alone. The movie was well done, tho'
it is a pastiche of several of the novels. In particular, Crowe and
Bettany are well cast -- tho' Crowe should be taller and fatter. And
the music is wonderful.

I hear he has the jargon down right, and he does have the period
grammar down, all the way to the proper use of the conditional: "If he
don't come, he doesn't signify."

Move over, Jane Austen.

Riv content: obvious, to me anyway. I am now about 6/24.
