Charlie, Being a little picky here, but fossil fuels will never totally run out. Peak Oil is about extraction not keeping up with demand and energy returned on energy invested (EROEI). IMO our biggest concern with Peak Oil and recourse depletion should be with the warfare that will accompany the competition between nations rushing to secure access to the remaining resources. If you have not read the 2010 Joint Operating Environment (JOE), published by JFCOM, I urge you to do so. In the report the military says, “By 2012, surplus oil production capacity could entirely disappear, and as early as 2015, the shortfall in output could reach nearly 10 MBD” The military goes on to say that humanity's next few decades will be filled with warfare. The German Bundeswehr has given a similar assessment of the world energy situation. IMO we are already feeling the effects of recourse depletion, 9/11, Iraq War, food riots etc... Who knows how it will all play out? But one thing is for certain, this is very serious and no magic technology is going to save us and allow us to maintain business as usual. Mother Nature does not care about what we want or think we deserve. Mother Nature only deals in reality and that reality can sometimes be very cruel. Shawn
