Blakely installed fenders on his Trek and kept them year 'round; he found he crossed enough irrigation runoff puddles to make them worth while. But then, at 10K+ miles on a normal year, you'd probably cross a lot of everything.
I kept Honjos on the commuter Riv until they broke and I didn't bother to replace them.
