I normally keep most of the Autocorrect and Autoformat options turned off (like 
smart quotes) except for special purposes.  Now that you mention it, that could 
be the reason some diacritics have gotten changed, at least in “English” words 
like élite and naïve, while my Names with Death Dates file seems to have 
remained stable, with Unicode diacritics, for a couple of years now.

Haven’t figured out how to turn off smart quotes within email, though!

I assume you've examined the Options in Word and un-checked anything that says 
"replace as you type..." ?

It's in different places depending on what version, but I found it by opening 
"Spelling and Grammar" and clicking Options...
