Joan Wang asked: >What is the differences between 260 and 264? Thomas will undoubtedly say my answer is wrong, but *only* in terms of how it affects the work here at SLC:
Field 260 as used in AACR2 records need not have indicators (AACR2 did not adopt repeating imprint requiring indicators as did MARBI). Field 260 has subfields, $e$f$g, which allow inclusion of manufacturer in a single 260. Distributor may also be included in a single 260. Field 264 as used in RDA records repeats, with 1st indicator for earlier, intermediate, and current publisher, and 2nd indicator for function such as producer, publisher, manufacturer, and distributor. I wonder if any will use the 260 2nd indicator for producer in DVD records for the original producer of a motion picture. (Some include producer in 245/$c, others interpret RDA to mean producer goes in 508; test records are inconsistent. We use 508.) Copyright date can not replace publication date in 264 1; if no publication date, use the copyright date in square brackets without "c" or copyright symbol. If information is supplied from outside the resource, bracket each 264 subfield separately, as opposed to a single set of brackets for the whole 260. In our e-book records: 264 1 $a$b$c replaces 260 $a$b$c 264 33 $a$b$c replaces 260 $e($f$g) We had intended to continue using 260, but PCC instructs that 264 must be used for new RDA records. For clients who wish it, we will export the two 264s above as a single 260. We will guess publication date for the first 264 $c, and not use 264 4 $c copyright date. No client reports that their ILS is ready to cope with three 264s. We have not decided whether to insert this copyright date in 260$c after publication date on export. If it is the same as publication date, it seems redundant to me. We had considered repeating $c. The PCC instructions could be read to mean a single record might have both 260 and 264. That is not the case. __ __ J. McRee (Mac) Elrod (m...@slc.bc.ca) {__ | / Special Libraries Cataloguing HTTP://www.slc.bc.ca/ ___} |__ \__________________________________________________________
