I was a beta tester for Sanyo offgrid mini splits in 2008. Been using
splits ever since. Costco sells DIY along with HVAC in Florida.
Also EG4 has DIY. The best from Fugitsu and the like are 30 + SEER and
need a pro to pull a vacuumed. I no longer do the installs unless it is
in Hawaii or a really nice place to travel😉
The DIY models (special connectors) are very good but you do need a bit
of skill. On all of the splits, the multi station are not near
the energy efficiency as the single 12,000 to 18000 Btu models. Multi
station is a huge mistake offgrid.
The offgrid mentality can be applied to grid homes. Just have an area
that you cool / heat and you can survive a major outage for weeks plus !
If you live in the Southwest you can do this without a generator.
