I have been working with Arctic https://www.arcticheatpumps.com/ for a couple
of years on slab only radiant heat & cooling. Back up depending on climate is
one issue: grid tied is not a problem electric works fine. The first house I
did they installed 200 amp service before I was involved & had to upgrade to
400 Amp service. Lesson one - Have you plan together before you start to build.
Double check that your electric service can handle the 40A for 1 heat pump &
100A for the back up tank heaters. You can see where the 400A service comes in
quickly.
Off grid LPG boiler as a backup or oversize the heat pumps.
I recommend a back up source of heat - If something can fail & it can freeze at
some point in time, it will.

That Said it's a lot of standard plumbing & a 100% fill with 40% concentration
fill with glycol. I am not sure that I would recommend it as a DIY system
though I think that they do present it as such.

I have not done a mini split but have assisted family out of state pick thru
various proposals to install at their home.

I was a beta tester for Sanyo offgrid mini splits in 2008. Been using splits
ever since. Costco sells DIY along with HVAC in Florida.
Also EG4 has DIY. The best from Fugitsu and the like are 30 + SEER and need a
pro to pull a vacuumed. I no longer do the installs unless it is in Hawaii or a
really nice place to travel😉

The DIY models (special connectors) are very good but you do need a bit of
skill. On all of the splits, the multi station are not near
the energy efficiency as the single 12,000 to 18000 Btu models. Multi station
is a huge mistake offgrid.

The offgrid mentality can be applied to grid homes. Just have an area that you
cool / heat and you can survive a major outage for weeks plus ! If you live in
the Southwest you can do this without a generator.

HI All,

I have been getting a lot of questions about people wanting to install mini
splits in their off grid homes, and in normal homes.

The line of questions usually involves DIY vs contractor. Of course the price
difference is staggering, roughly 5X more for contractor. And I'm being asked
all sorts of questions about the DIY versions.

Is there a good place for information so I can educate myself as to the
different brands etc
Or maybe someone can contact me off list if they have some info to share.

Thanks'

jay
