I very much disagree.
ME TOO!
I work around so much technical issues and try to get my applications
and frameworks together. "Of course" I'm on the beta list and use and
"test" the mySQL-Beta-PlugIn for several months. But I saw never a
explicit warning, perhaps I missed it, but e.g. checking the readme
file, there is nothing about it.
Yes, it's my fault. I should check it and see the source and contact
mySQL AB and ... but come on, how much work will it be to check all
other used technology / components / libraries. I now from other
vendors, that they announced the issue BEFORE releasing a new version
of their "plugins" and explicit say your customer need a commercial
licence to deploy our/your app with mySQL-PlugIn, ... but nothing
similar from RB.
THIS is the most serious issue for me during the last years!
Third, personally I currently have a couple of hundred users using a
copy of my program with this code in it. I now have to drop this code
and inform everyone of my users then offer them a way to migrate their
data to another DB and so on.
Not only the issue of migrating your customers, but first of all, you
need to discuss with them. During last weeks I've had to meetings
with customers and they simply didn't get it. "mySQL was on my
machine, why need I to buy it?", "Everyone use it for free, so why we
need to pay for it..." and many more. Arguing NOW while a version is
already released is much more difficult, then to not release a mySQL-
version due to licensing.
But what I really ask myself, what is with your deployed software?
It's out and the customers have it in their hands, what if they
pointed out, that you're using the mySQL-Library and request the
source code? Furthermore, what if a competitor got knowledge of this
fact, e.g. while trying to acquire your customer and he asked you to
release your source code!!!!!!!
Deleting the old version and deploy a new mySQL-free version is not
the only thing to do, because my customers are "good" customers and
do a lot of backup. Will you go and delete all their backups, or do
you prepare your source code to be released, if some one discover the
wrong file?!?!?
Btw. while writing these lines the migration from mySQL to a new
system is running in the background ;-)
